While the experiment with the squad turned out to be expensive, Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza dismissed the notion, stating that they were not up to the mark in executing the plan well.
Bangladesh’s winning-spree got a break in the third game when Zimbabwe pulled off an emphatic 31-run win to stay alive in the series. It is believed the completely new look Bangladesh lacked the experience which contributed in Zimbabwe’s turnaround from a four-game losing streak.
“When the team loses any match, it is easy to find out many loopholes. But I admit, it’s natural that many debutants and change in the team could make you believe that those factors caused the defeat. From what I have seen, it wasn’t that we fielded a new look Bangladesh. It was that we weren’t up to the mark. We didn’t bowl well, bat well and nothing went right for us in the particular match,” Mashrafe said after the match.
The rain also contributed in Bangladesh’s defeat, believed Mashrafe.
“Our bowlers had faced a tough time to grip the ball but I must credit Zimbabwe batsmen. They batted well and defended it well.”
When Bangladesh made wholesale changes to the squad, at the same time, they kept experimenting with the batting position. After batting in No. 6 position in the last two matches, Shakib batted in No. 5 position while what caught the most attention was Mosaddek Hossain’s promotion in crucial No. 4 position. When Mosaddek went to bat, Bangladesh were still in good position after Sabbir Rahman kept the chase in hunt. It was believed Shakib was perfect to bat at No. 4 position given the situation and his experience. Those things didn’t come as good for Bangladesh as the experiment is believed to be excessive.
“Two of our players were injured while Al-Amin Hossain was rested. Tamim was also rested in order to see Imrul Kayes because he was in form. As I said earlier, due to rain we had faced difficulties in gripping the ball. When they went to bowl, the outfield was dried up completely,” Mashrafe said.
“Yes for a new player it’s tough position,” he said on Mosaddek’s batting position. “Everybody got an idea of his role. We want to see how they fare in particular position. Our plan was right but our execution wasn’t good.”
Praising Sabbir Rahman, who is continuing his rich vein of form, Mashrafe said, his form is positive for Bangladesh team. “I expect him to continue such way. He gave our batting solidity. His form in this crucial position could make all free from pressure.”
Expectation was high on new pace sensation Abu Haider Rony. Though he took two wickets he was so expensive. Moreover he couldn’t bowl well in the first two overs which gave the Zimbabwe batsmen settle in the crease. Nonetheless, Mashrafe said, as a newcomer, he was good.
