Doctors belonging to the Chittagong chapter of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) went on a wildcat strike for 24 hours from 1pm yesterday. Work at private hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres came to a halt. The strike was in protest against cases filed alleging negligence on the part of doctors.
Leaders of the BMA warned that if the cases were not withdrawn within 24 hours, their members would strike work at government hospitals and health complexes too.
On Tuesday, separate cases were filed before a Chittagong court against Dr Shamima Rosi and Dr Mahabubul Alam on charges of negligence leading to the death of a patient, and against Dr Rana Chowdhury for leaving a piece of bandage inside the stomach of a patient after operation. Patients and their relatives had to suffer as the private hospitals stopped admitting patients. Even the outdoor department was without a doctor.
A woman died allegedly due to the negligence of doctors after delivery at Surgiscope Hospital in Chittagong on January 9. She was Meherunnesa Rima, 25, wife of Australia expatriate Abdullah Al Mamun and niece of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister, Nurul Islam. A case was filed against Dr Shamima Rosi and Dr Mahabubul Alam on Tuesday.
A case was filed against Dr Rana Chowdhury after a piece of bandage was found inside the stomach of Nuru Absar, who had been admitted with stomach pain to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). As the pain persisted even after operation, it was found that a piece of bandage had been left inside the stomach. His father, Jabel Hossain, filed the case.
