The BNP has termed the 15th amendment to the Constitution "illegal" and "unconstitutional".
“As per the statement of Chief Justice SK Sinha that writing copies of verdict after retirement is illegal and unconstitutional, the 15th amendment to the Constitution will also be illegal and unconstitutional,” BNP standing committee member, Nazrul Islam Khan, said yesterday (Wednesday).
His comments came a day after the Chief Justice, in a message marking the first anniversary of his taking oath of office, said: “Some judges make abnormal delay in writing copies of verdict. And some judges continue to write copies of the verdict for a long period, even after their retirement which is unlawful and unconstitutional.”
Addressing a meeting to mark the 80th birth anniversary of party founder, the late President Ziaur Rahman, the BNP leader said the caretaker government system has been scrapped in the name of implementing the court verdict. But the Chief Justice said copies of the verdict which were written after retirement is illegal and unconstitutional.
“Thus, as per the statement of the Chief Justice, scrapping of the election time caretaker government system in the name of court verdict was illegal and unconstitutional,” he added.
Meanwhile, the BNP yesterday informed diplomats of various countries about the rigging and other irregularities during the recently concluded municipal polls. They were also shown videos and given documents related to such irregularities.
A delegation, headed by BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, briefed the diplomats at a meeting at BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office on the irregularities which took place on December 30 last year.
BNP international affairs secretary Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon said it was a routine view-exchange meeting to with the diplomats. He also said the diplomats were eager to know as to how the irregularities had been committed. "They also wanted to know our position during the polls," he added.
Replying to a question, Ripon said they had showed the diplomats a documentary on the rigging and other irregularities. “We told them that holding a fair poll is not possible under the present government,” he added.
