Cultivation of tomato in char areas of the district has brought economic solvency to many farmers this year. They have also achieved a bumper production of the vegetable.
Sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said a total of 1,640 hectares of land has been brought under tomato cultivation this season, of which 1,150 hectares were in Jamalpur sadar alone. Last year, tomato was cultivated on 1,458 hectares of land and 5,5400 metric tonnes of tomato were produced.
According to sources, farmers sowed seeds in the months of August- September and in the beginning of October they planted the saplings in field. They started plucking tomatoes in the beginning of December and will market those up to the month of February. Farmer Sultan Miah of Gazaria village in Sadar upazila, said he cultivated tomato on four bighas of land spending Tk one lakh this year and has already sold tomato worth Tk 1.75 lakh. In December, he sold per maund of tomato at Tk 1,200 to Tk 1,400 but now the price has dropped to Tk 250 to Tk 300 per maund.
Training Officer, DAE, Md Abu Hanif said this year, about 10,000 farmers have cultivated tomato in the district and they are expecting to harvest about 65,000 metric tonnes of tomatoes this year.
