Call to ensure rights of transgenders

STAFF REPORTER, Khulna

Speakers at a meeting in the city yesterday said multi-sectoral approach should be taken to ensure fundamental rights especially health, social and legal rights of the transgender people for uplifting their living condition and livelihood.
Bandhu Social Welfare Society arranged the interactive meeting to create awareness about supporting sexual health rights and wellbeing sexual minorities.
The meeting was held at the conference room of a city hotel in cooperation with British High Commission and USAID.
Speakers said the people of transgender community (Hijra) are also human beings. They have lives, they need food, shelter, clothes, education and job to survive in the world like other men and women do.
Despite the fact that they are human beings, they are denied of their rights, as social taboo and discrimination made them untouchable, fearsome and funny. They also said Hijras were sexually disabled by born but are not considered as disabled in the society and thus being deprived of their rights.
They also said Hijras get separated from their families when they start developing some particular characteristics. They are gradually isolated from their friends and other people in society. The speakers said Hijras must be provided with all civic facilities like people of other communities as it is their constitutional rights. There are around 300 (three hundred) Hijras lived in Khulna said the organisers. Executive director of organisation Shale Ahmed facilitated the meeting titled ‘Consulting meeting with Media personnel’.
