Two groups of students of Dhaka University (one supporting the plan to build the metro rail route through the campus and the other who do not want it) formed separate human chains at the Raju sculpture on the campus yesterday.
Protesting the proposed route of metro rail through the university campus, students under the banner of General Students of Dhaka University said “We are not against the metro rail project; rather, we appreciate any development of the country. But the route of the metro rail should be built outside the campus, not inside DU,” they said.
The protesters alleged that the route plan through the campus is also an insult to the memories of Raju, Kazi Nazrul Islam and the three leaders, whose memorials and mausoleums are on the campus.
One of the protesters Tanisha Taharin said that “We are collecting signatures from the students and will submit it to DU vice-chancellor to protect their beloved campus”.
Earlier, one group of DU non residential students who want the metro rail project through DU also formed a human chain at the altar of the Raju Sculpture near TSC around 10am yesterday. Sources said that the human chain was headed by the student wing of the Awami League Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). Speaking at the human chain, leaders of different bus committees of DU alleged that some of the leftist organisations are trying to disrupt the development of the country as well as metro rail route through DU.
“The metro rail would save our time and money, we could attend classes in time and that is why we want this rail route on the campus,” they said.
They also urged all the DU students to support the metro rail route through DU as well as to help the ongoing development of the country.
