Footpaths along major roads
to be freed by Apr: Annisul

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor M Annisul Huq yesterday said footpaths along major roads in the capital, including Mirpur Road, New Airport Road and Panthapath, will be freed by demolishing illegal makeshift establishments by April, reports UNB.
The mayor came up with the assurance while addressing a programme at Bangladesh University in the capital.
If any establishment cannot be demolished then those will be restructured in such a way so that pedestrians can move smoothly, he said.
Annisul also said water-logging problem in Dhaka city can be resolved within the next two years if Wasa works under the mayors of the two city corporations.
“Wasa and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) will have to work together to recover the rivers and canals, but that is not possible now.
If some departments of Rajuk and Wasa under the authority of the two city corporations then it will be easier to work together,” Annisul said.
Three research projects were presented at the urban lab of the university during the programme.
Mentionable that on November 29 Dhaka North City Corporation urged the city dwellers to stay behind him to continue his drive to make Dhaka a ‘neat and clean’ city freeing it from illegal occupants.
“[There’s] nothing to fear. I’m your city father. You’ve elected me. I’ll make the city neat and clean, it’s my responsibility,” he said.
On the other hand Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on December 19 also evicted around 50 illegal establishments from Gulistan area in the capital.
Sources at DSCC said the eviction drive, led by DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon, started at around 11:30 am.
Chief estate officer of DSCC Khalid Ahmed and two executivemagistrates -- Mamunur Rashid and Nazmus Soyeb - also accompanies the mayor during the drive
Contacted, DSCC chief estate officer Khalid Ahmed told UNB that they conducted the drive in front of Gulistan T&T head office, Sundarban Market, BRTC bus stand and Fulbaria bus stand till 3:45 pm.
Fifty illegally built pucca structures, mostly shops, were evicted during the drive, he said.
Replying to a question, the DSCC chief estate officer said around 150 police members as well as Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel took part in the eviction drive to avert any untoward incident.
