Ornamental stitching has now bcome a very effective venture in recent years bringing economic self-reliance to thousands of the rural unemployed, poor and distressed women in the northern districts, reports BSS.
Ornamental stitching like embroidering and spangling on female clothes continues to expand fast attracting more and more rural women following huge demand of their quality handworks in the markets. Thousands of rural women have already changed fortune and improved life standard after winning over abject poverty by earning through embroidering, spangling and ornamental stitching on saree, three pieces and many other female clothes.
According to Executive Director of Rangpur-based research organisation ‘Northbengal Institute of Development Studies’ Dr Syed Samsuzzaman, some rural women started such initiatives at their homes in scattered ways at the initial stage seven to ten years back. “Over the years, the home-based embroidery works have now got the shape of a growing cottage industry reducing poverty in rural areas with brighter prospect also to change and strengthen the rural macro- economy,” he added.
Rangpur Regional Coordinator of HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation Mamunur Rashid said many of the successful rural women have launched small-scale enterprises after getting training and assistance from different GO-NGOs in association with local traders and entrepreneurs.
