Server machines damaged

The activities of issuing machine readable passport (MRPs) at the Regional Passport Office, Chandpur  has been suspended since June 7 last as  all the  machines and internet server machines relating to making passports went out of order  after lightning  struck the passport office damaging the antenna there on June 2 night.
Senior Assistant Director of Passport Office Bipul Kumar Goswami said efforts are underway to put the machines in operation.
Meanwhile, two five- member enquiry teams from the head office in the capital have reached the place to repair the internet server machines at the office. It might take a week more for the machines to go in full operation, Bipul Kumar Goswami added.
The problem was detected on June 7 after consecutive three days holidays from June 3. Lightning struck the office on June 2 night.
On June 7, when the office was opened for the normal works the employees there detected that the machines were not working and the issuance of passports was suspended. The server machines connected to machine readable passports could not be repaired or put in operation immediately. As a result, the people seeking passports had to remain waiting at the office premises for a long time on the day. In the meantime, to avoid the answers of the people, a notice has been put up in front of the passport office stating that the activities of issuing passports were shelved due to some faults with the server machines.
The higher authority was informed of the matter and two teams of mechanics reached the place from the head office in the capital the next day. The suspension of issuing passports has caused sufferings to many people. Passport seekers who come here everyday from far –flung areas of the district have to go back disappointed.
