Nawayug Shrestha blasted a hat-trick as Nepal stormed into the final of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football tournament thrashing Maldives by 4-1 in the second semifinal yesterday. Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Nepal demonstrated an outstanding performance to edge past the favourites Maldives. The high-spirited Nepal took just few minutes to turn up with real pace and took the lead through Nawayug Srestha. He quickly reacted to utilise a rebounder.
Bishal Rai doubled the advantage inside eight minutes of the second half. Bishal Rai, the midfielder, who rushed into the box, saw no trouble to slam home from an unmarked position after having the ball possessions, as Maldives defender failed to clear a Rabin Srestha cross on 53rd (2-0). Nawayug Srestha fired home his second and the third for Nepal on 62nd minute when it was also an excellent finish from the forward (3-0). Maldives, who could make some pressure in the last 15 minutes, reduced one through Hassan Naiz, who pushed the ball into net on 77th minute (1-3).
