BNP yesterday alleged that the country’s democracy has now been sent into exile. “Bangladesh is now on the verge of falling into danger. But we are going ahead in our effort to restore the democracy,” said BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while talking to reporters in front of the grave of late president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Earlier, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia along with party senior leaders placed wreath at the party founders grave to mark his 80th birth anniversary. Mirza Fakhrul said Zia was not only a freedom fighter, soldier or politician, but also a legendary leader and a multidimensional statesman. “He (Zia) started work to build a prosperous Bangladesh from a bottomless basket,” said the BNP leader. He asserted that the main challenge for the BNP is to restore democracy in the country and ensure the fundamental rights of the people.
Replying to a question on the government’s move to remove Zia’s grave from its current location at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, BNP Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman termed it a part of conspiracy hatched by the government.
“They (government) tried to measure the reaction of the people. We think Zia’s mazar cannot be removed from there,” he added. Asked whether the BNP would invite Jatiya Party to join their movement, he replied in the affirmative saying, “We have invited all to participate in the movement for democracy.” BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Lt Gen (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Tariqul Islam, among others, were present on the occasion.
