State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim had a meeting with the Facebook‘s official in Singapore to find a way to filter out objectionable status or comments on Facebook. During that time she visited the information monitoring system of Facebook, where it showed an active Facebook user of 1.01 billion in the world daily.
The junior minister began a two weeks visit to Singapore and Malaysia. On January 18, she posted on her Facebook “I have not come here to sign any contract with Facebook , I have come here to see how Facebook officials can filter out status or comments on degrading women, deformity , bullying, cyber threat to an organisation, terrorist activities on social media.“
She also added that Facebook officials are helping many countries to find out the ID of users responsible for these kind of actions and she wants the same kind of help from Facebook officials for Bangladesh also.
She also added that many countries are spending good amount of money for cyber security but she is hoping that Facebook officials will give Bangladesh the same thing without any investment if she can convince them thorough meeting itself. Recently, the social media appointed a translator for Bengali language.
Prior to leaving for Singapore, mentioning that different issues would be tabled during the meeting, Tarana Halim said she would also raise how many complaints related to social norms of the Bangladesh were filed to facebook authority. She said Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has been made focal point to communicate with the facebook.
Apart from the meeting with facebook, the state minister would hold talks with telecommunications and ICT ministers of the two countries as well as Google and Microsoft.
On November 30 last year, Tarana wrote to facebook citing examples of how the network was misused forcing several women in the country to commit suicide and how the miscreants uploaded objectionable contents often exposing girls of Bangladesh to extreme miseries.
