hospital suspended

The health ministry has ordered Barisal’s Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) authorities to suspend 226 newly-appointed employees for alleged irregularities in their appointment.
The SBMCH assistant director, Dr Osman Gani, yesterday (Tuesday) admitted that he had received a letter signed by the ministry’s additional secretary (Par-2), AKM Fazlul Haque.
The letter said all professional activities, salaries and other financial payments of the new appointees should be put on hold till further orders. Those who have already joined their job should be told to discontinue, the letter added. Following news of the official order, the newly appointed employees staged a demonstration and locked the main gate of the hospital at 11am.
Later, the police rushed to the spot and removed the agitators from the hospital premises. Two demonstrators were arrested and a large police team was deployed to maintain law and order.
Earlier, many applicants for jobs at the hospital had alleged irregularities in the appointments, prompting the health ministry to form a three-member committee to probe the complaints. In its preliminary report, the probe committee confirmed the allegations.
The health ministry had on Monday suspended SBMCH director Dr Md Nizamul Islam Faruk, deputy director Dr Md Shahidul Islam Hawladar and administrative officer Md Abdul Jalil for their alleged involvement in the irregularities.
The SBMCH authorities had appointed a shorthand writer-cum-computer operator, a photographer, an instruments technician, five office assistant-cum-computer operators, two medical record keepers, three telephone operators, an instruments caretaker (ICT), a driver, five electric/lift man/mechanics, 67 MLSS, a ward boy, five night guards, 12 cooks and 66 cleaners.
The authorities had also appointed 54 employees on a temporary basis.
