While the head coach Chandika Hathurusingha was blatant in expressing his desire to win the one-off Test against mighty India, the team combination of Bangladesh didn’t show the positive intent. The strategy which Bangladesh employed indeed raised enormous questions.
“We always play to win, so we cannot say we want to draw the Test match. The plan doesn’t change against any team. Our plan is to win the game,” the statement that was made by Hathurusingha ahead of the game but the approach to the Test was nowhere to go for the ultimate kill.
Bangladesh Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim also reckoned they have fifty-fifty chance in this Test but at the very first day, India made it clear they were more proactive than Bangladesh.
The team management in which Hathurusingha and Mushfiqur are a vital part, chose to go with three genuine bowlers including just one pacer which was deemed as a negative approach for a team who wants to win it. The inclusion of leg-spinner Jubair Hossain Likhon at the expense of Rubel Hossain, Bangladesh’s best pacer at the moment, raised quite an eye-brow as there was no secret that the Indians play spinners well than any other country in the world.
Likhon leaked 41 runs in his seven overs and hardly could bother the Indian batsmen who made merry in the benign pitch.
Rubel Hossain Test record though is not impressive one, he is the bowler who gave Indian batsmen some torrid time in their quarterfinal clash in the World Cup. Given the recent record, he could have been a better option for Bangladesh.
“In this sort of flat wicket, a pacer needs to be aggressive and fast. There is no doubt that Rubel is the more aggressive and faster than Shahid,” said former national pacer Hasibul Hossain Shanto.
Mohammad Shahid with just two Tests under his belt remained the only one pacer to deal with the mighty Indian batting line up while the other two genuine bowlers are left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and leg-spinner Jubair Hossain Likhon. Shakib Al Hasan and Shuvagata Hom are counted as all-rounder more than specialist bowlers so as Soumya Sarkar who shared the new ball with Shahid with his military pace.
“The team combination also looks faulty. You have decide first in which role Shuvagata Hom will play- a batsman or a bowler. If you count his batting as his strength, Abul Hasan Raju also could be a good option. Raju has the pace and he batted well in the domestic circuit also,” Shanto slammed the team combination.
The common notion is that you have to take 20 wickets if you win the Test and so you have to field at least four specialist bowlers. Indian team led by Virat Kohli rather showed the intent of winning the Test at any cost by fielding five specialist bowlers including three pacers.
“If you have the intention of winning the Test, why you prepare this kind of flat wicket,” questioned another former national pacer Tapash Baishya. “The batsmen would have to play well extraordinarily. Otherwise the fate of the match has already been decided.”
