Sayedee files review plea seeking his acquittal

Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee filed a review petition with the Supreme Court (SC) seeking acquittal and reconsideration of its verdict that commuted his death penalty to jail unto death for wartime offences. Advocate Abedin Tuhin, one of the counsels for Sayedee, filed the petition with the related branch of the apex court seeking acquittal order of his client. The petition includes a  total of 16 points for releasing Sayedee from the charges brought against him for crimes against humanity committed during the War of Liberation in 1971.
Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, chief defence counsel of Sayedee, told reporters that the government has no legal right to file review petition against the apex court verdict.  The government has only filed the review petition against the verdict in Sayedee case to create pressure on the court, he claimed.
On January 12, the government filed a review petition with the Supreme Court against the court’s verdict commuting the death penalty of war crimes convict and Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee to imprisonment until death. The review petition sought death penalty for Sayedee. After filing the review petition, Deputy Attorney General Ekramul Haque Tutul told reporters that it contains total 653 pages, along with five legal grounds, so that the court considers the prayer seeking death penalty for Sayedee.
On December 31, 2015, the Supreme Court released the full copy of its verdict commuting Sayedee’s death penalty to imprisonment until death for crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 war. The Supreme Court released its full judgment after all five judges signed the 614-page verdict. Among the five judges, Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah wanted to acquit Sayedee of all charges but Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury supported death penalty for Sayedee. However, the then Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain and Justices Surendra Kumar Sinha and Hasan Foez Siddique reduced Sayedee’s death penalty to imprisonment until death. The International Crimes Tribunal, on February 28, 2013, handed down death sentence to Sayedee on three charges of crimes against humanity.
