Sabbir Rahman gave the Bangladesh another option while they are on intense search of proper combination for the T20, a format in which they often found them in vulnerable state.
After scoring 46 in the first match, what turned out to be a match-winning score, Sabbir showed a flash of brilliance in bowling in addition of continuing his rich vein of form in batting. He stayed not out on 43, guiding the side through a torrid period and later rattled Zimbabwe with three for 11. That three hauls included the big wicket of Hamilton Masakadza whose unwavering resolve threatened to take the match away. Thus Sabbir gave the account of his all-round abilities in Bangladesh’s effortless 42-run win over Zimbabwe in the second game.
“I told him to hone his bowling skill,” said captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza. “He has been in good touch in batting since the semi-final of the BPL. As a batsman he is up to the mark. If he can bowl, it will be an additional advantage for the team.”
Originally a leg-spinner, Sabbir’s bowling style always gave him the chance of taking wickets when he could land the ball in right areas. Mashrafe said, they are trying to motivate him because the leg-spinner is now rare in the world.
“He is a leg-spinner, which is now rare in the world. He might not be a classical leg-spinner like Shane Warne or others but leg-spinner is always a wicket-taking bowler. If he can continue taking wickets such way, it will benefit the team. He is being motivated to keep it up,” Mashrafe added.
Mashrafe however didn’t disclose whether they get an idea of the proper combination but said he was happy to lead the series 2-0 at the moment.
“It’s difficult to say, two more matches are left. Let’s see what happened in the last two matches. But at the moment we are happy to take the lead by 2-0. Our goal was to win each and every match.”
The captain still raised some issued about batting as he thought there are rooms to improve in batting but he so far was happy with the bowling.
“We played well as a bowling unit. Batting wasn’t that bad but we need more improvement in this sector. Those who gets set, should play a long innings which still we lacked.”
Terming Mustafizur a rare bowler and incomparable to others, Mashrafe said, the left arm pacer is ‘out of the world’.
“There is no chance to compare the other bowlers in the world with Mustafizur. He is out of the world. He is not comparable.”
Mustafizur was rested for the last two matches after he was injured slightly on his shoulder.
“He had old problem in shoulder and elbow. He might finish the over but I didn’t take the risk of allowing him to ball the last ball. I withdrew him immediately. There are bowlers who also should give the chance to show their mettle.”
“Mushfiqur is our key batsman. Hope his injury is not serious,” Mashrafe said about Mushfiqur Rahim who was ruled out from the series and was replaced by fast bowler Taskin Ahmed.
