Six houses gutted in Ctg
At least six dwelling houses were gutted in a devastating fire in Patenga Khalpar area under Patenga police station of Chittagong yesterday morning.
Fire service sources said the fire originated from a cooking oven around 6.25am quickly engulfed the surrounding houses. Seven units of fire service from Agrabad, Bandar, CEPZ stations rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control at about 7.45 am. Properties of six dwelling houses worth about TK three lakh were gutted in the fire, the sources added.
Sweetmeat factory fined
A mobile court of the Chittagong district administration yesterday fined a sweetmeat and bakery factory Tk one lakh for producing goods by using burnt and six month old decomposed oil.
Executive Magistrate Ruhul Amin led the court in the city’s Omar Ali Market under Kotwali thana and fined Shad Sweetmeat factory Tk one lakh for producing adulterated food items using burnt and stale oil and also for unhygienic environment in the factory.
One killed in road accident
A day labourer was killed and nine others were injured in a road accident in Phultala Jute Mill area on Khulna-Jessore highway in Khulna city on Saturday.
The deceased was Anis Sheikh, 40, hailed from Gopinathpur village in Jessore district.
Police and locals said the accident took place around 8.30am when a Khulna-bound mud-loaded truck hit a three wheeler easy bike from behind. The passengers carrying easy bike smashed on the spot, leaving 10 people injured. Local people rushed them to Phultala Health Complex where duty doctor declared Anis Sheikh dead.
Five BNP-Jamaat men held
Police in overnight anti-crime drives arrested 53 persons, including four BNP activists and a Jamaat worker, from different places in the district Saturday, police sources said.
The arrested persons also included absconding accused persons in different cases, thieves, muggers, drug traders, anti-social elements and other suspicious people on various charges.
After primary interrogation, police produced them before different Rangpur courts from where they were sent to jail hajat later Saturday afternoon, the sources said.
