Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta yesterday came down heavily on different ministries for seeking additional budgetary allocations for the fiscal year 2014-15 without giving adequate explanations for their demands, reports UNB. Taking part in the general discussion on the Supplementary Budget for the outgoing fiscal, he also blasted the ministries that failed to spend their allocated money. According to the budget document, Tk 250,506 crore was allocated in favour of 59 ministries and divisions for the FY 2014-15. But in the supplementary budget, allocations for 27 ministries and divisions was increased to Tk 9,508.57 crore while Tk 23,006.95 reduced for 32 ministries and divisions. Suranjit said the passing system of Supplementary Budget is faulty. "You’ll seek additional money in the Supplementary Budget and we’ll give you that… this is not the process. This process is not practiced in other countries," he said. The AL lawmaker also said the ministries have to define in which area they need the extra money. He said the demand for additional money has to be placed before Parliament or Parliamentary standing committees before placing it in the Supplementary Budget. He said, "Thirty-two ministries couldn’t spend their money, why they couldn’t do that, they have to explain it." He also demanded that the names of 32 ministries that could not spend their allocated money be mentioned in the budget document like the ones that sought extra money through the supplementary budget.
