Prices of vegetables fall in Narsingdi

Prices of vegetables have registered a fall with the arrival of different kinds of huge vegetables in the local markets, reports BSS.
Some traders of vegetables in the district town said, prices of vegetables have declined with a rise in the supply of winter vegetables in local markets. Different kinds of winter vegetables grew aplenty in Shibpur, Belabo and Raipura upazilas of the district during the current Robi season,
BSS correspondent yesterday visited a number of wholesale vegetable markets in different upazilas of the district found that the farmers were selling their vegetables at lower prices.
Bean and brinjal are selling at Tk 400 to 450 per maunds while cauliflower and cabbage are selling at Tk 700 to 800 per hundred, gourd and pumpkin are selling at Tk 20 to 25 each according to size, tomato at Tk 600 to 800 per maund, potato at Tk 700 to 800 per maund. Radish is selling at Tk 100 to120 per maund while lal-shak and palong-shak are selling at Tk300 to 350 per maund.
Narsingdi district, a vegetables surplus area, is usually supplying 30 to 40 percent of its total production to the capital and other districts after meeting the local demand.
Department of Agriculture Extension sources said a target to producing 1,75000 tonnes of winter vegetables from 9,100 hectares of land was fixed this season. But the farmers cultivated more land then the target.
Prices of rice also registered a fall in the district with an adequate supply of Aman rice in the local markets.
Coarse rice is being sold at Tk 30 to 32 per kg against Tk 34 to 36 per kg one month ago. Medium variety of rice sells at Tk 34 to 38 against Tk 40 to 42 per kg while fine rice sells at Tk 44 to 48 which was 50 to 52 per kg one month ago . There has been a good production of Aman paddy in the district this year.
