NAOGAON: The farmers have been showing keen interest in maize cultivation this season in the district encouraged by the excellent economic return from cultivating the crop in recent years, reports BSS.
The farmers of the district got fair prices of maize produced during the last couple of years to the tune of taka 18,000 to 20,000 while the cost of production was taka 7000 to 8000 for cultivating one bigha of land during the last couple of years.
District Agriculture Extension Department office sources said a total of 4,126 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation in 11 upazila of the district with a production target of 29,500 tonnes of maize.
Most of the maize would be produced in Atrai upazila of the district, the sources added.
Deputy Director of Agriculture extension department Sottabrato Shaha said maize is being used in preparation of various nutritional foods like corn-well, corn-flex, poultry and animal feed and fodder and in several industrial products as well.
