Maldives stormed into the semifinals as Group B champions after sharing points in a 1-1 drawn match of Bahrain in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup Football Tournament yesterday.
Bahrain played smartly in their last group match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium to book the last and fourth berth in the semifinal as Maldives had already sealed a semifinal spot.
Maldives played in a relaxed mood throughout the 90 minutes game as they never exerted all out game or went for a close tackle probably in a bid to avoid injuries. Bahrain team shattered Bangladesh Olympic team last hopes with this valuable point. A defeat of Bahrain could have paved Bangladesh Olympic team’s way to bounce back in the race. The result meant Bangladesh Olympic team were eliminated from the group leg after conceding defeat to Maldives and drew with Bahrain before playing their last match against Cambodia later in the day.
However, Bahrain began the match with some positive approach when they went very closer to score at the early stage but a good attempt of forward Anwar Ali was saved at the cost of a corner by Maldives goalkeeper on 14th minute.
Maldives, who settled their semifinal berth after defeating Cambodia and Bangladesh, took few minutes to emerge the match control and opened the space twice in a span of two minutes.
On 15th minute Ibrahim Ansar’s close range header on Easa Ismail hit the cross bar but the favourites kept their pressure and took the lead through Imaaz Ahmed scored from the goal-mouth melee to put Maldives into lead (1-0). After taking the lead Maldives never looked aggressive to increase the lead, as some of the good attacks ended with poor finish from at the edge of the area.
Bahrain team, who were playing in counter attack strategy in the most of the first half, trailing by 0-1, started the second half with more attacking to enjoy the ball possession evenly while they equalized the margin on 57th minute.
This time Abdoul Aziz Obaid delivered a pin-pointed left side cross that found unmarked Anwar Ali inside the area, who faced no trouble to sent the ball into net with a good header over the advancing goalkeeper, as defenders were watching but to make any disturb the striker (1-1).
It was something astonishing that the attitude of the Maldives players raised so many questions most of the second half, as their body-languages were not at all sportsmanship while most of the time they were not spirited.
