Chittagong: Urging people from all walks of life to help the government in protecting rivers, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan yesterday said killing a river is a crime similar to killing a human being, reports UNB.
The minister came up with the remarks while addressing a divisional meeting of the River Protection Committee at Chittagong Circuit House.
He said the government has a plant to dredge 65 rivers and have already started the dredging in seven rivers.
Assuring that Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) will play a vital role to save rivers, its mayor AZM Nasir Uddin said hundred percent transparency
has to be maintained to evict the illegal establishments on the river bank.
He added that a lot of industries established on the banks of the Karnafuli River have become a major concern for their pollution of river-water.
Chairman of the River Protection Commission M Ataharul Islam said river boundary will be fixed in accordance with the CS (Cadastral Survey) map and the changes of the course of the rivers and the current channel will be considered during the eviction drive.
Chittagong Divisional Commissioner M Ruhul Amin, BIWTA Chairman Commodore M Mozammel Haque, among others, were present at the meeting.
