Khulna T20 tit-bit

Sports Reporter, Khulna

Only a batsman Mushfiqur

This was the first time for Mushfiqur Rahim that he didn’t keep wicket for the side in T20 cricket. Mushfiqur though made his debut for Bangladesh team as a specialist batsman in a Test in Lord’s in 2005, he became regular gloveman for the side once Khaled Mashud Pilot retired. He simultaneously kept wicket in all three formats before the talk got a force whether he should give up wicket-keeping in order to reduce the burden on him. Liton Das then kept wicket in Test series against South Africa, giving the indication Mushfiqur will be withdrawn gradually from that role.

Half-century in T20 cricket

Bangladesh made a half-century in giving T20 International cap when two new players simultaneously earned their debut in the first T20 match against Zimbabwe. All-rounder Shuvagata Hom and wicket-keeper-batsman Nurul Hasan Sohan made their debut as the 49th and 50th T20 player for Bangladesh in the shortest format of the cricket. Bangladesh debuted in T20 cricket in 2006 against the same opponent at the same ground which holds the first T20. Apart from Zimbabwe, the other Test nations however had already crossed 50 as far as debut of the players in this format is concerned. England so far gave highest 75 caps while 74 players made debut for Australia.

Shakib’s worst T20 figure

It was easily a bad day for ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as far as the bowling and fielding is concerned. After registering his worst bowling figure in T20 International, he dropped a sitter off Mustafizur, giving Hamilton Masakadza a lifeline. However in bowling he got one wicket but that cost him 45 runs in four overs. His previous worst bowling figure was 4-0-40-0 against New Zealand in Pallekele during the 2012 World T20 in Sri Lanka. Shakib took 46 wickets in 39 matches so far with the best figure of 4 for 21 against Zimbabwe in 2013. However he made an amend in batting by hitting an unbeaten 20 which sailed the side home.

Soumya’s dazzling effort

It went for six eventually but Soumya’s effort was eye-catching. Shakib Al Hasan tossed up one on middle, which Vusi Sibanda swung away to long-off. Soumya was there by the edge of the boundary. He had about five chances to take Vusi Sibanda's catch  but he kept juggling with the ball and tap-dancing near the boundary perimeter. He had cleanly taken the catch on the first and fifth occasions but with the fourth, he had flicked the rope with his toes. He realised that and threw the ball into the field of play with anger. Video replay then showed that his foot had touched the boundary rope. Nonetheless it was an overwhelming effort.
