On the heels of police assault on a Bangladesh Bank official, an official of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) was injured after he was beaten up by police at Mirhajaribagh in the capital early yesterday. The victim, Bikash Chandra Das, an inspector of DSCC’s cleaning department, was first admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and later shifted to the ICU of Lab Aid Hospital at Dhanmondi. According to witnesses, some policemen, led by sub-inspector Arshad Hossain Akash of Jatrabari Police Station, intercepted Bikash and beat him with sticks and rifles around 4:20am. Chandan Das, the victim’s brother, said Bikash had left his Dayaganj residence around 4am on a motorbike for Mirhajaribagh to supervise the work of cleaners there, and he came under the attack on the way. Informed over cell phone by the cleaners in the area, the victim’s relatives rushed to the spot and took him to DMCH as he had sustained severe injuries on his head.
Following a CT scan and other examinations, doctors suggested his admission to the hospital, the family said, adding he was shifted to the ICU of Lab Aid Hospital at Dhanmondi in the evening. When contacted, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Wari Division) Syed Nurul Islam said, “The incident occurred due to a misunderstanding.” The official said there were two police teams in the area, including a civil team. The civil team had signaled Bikash, who was riding a motorbike, to stop. But he ignored the signal and sped off. The other policemen then tried to intercept him with sticks and as a result, he lost control of his motorbike and fell on the ground, the police officer claimed.
When Bikash introduced himself as a DSCC official, the policemen said sorry to him, said Nurul Islam. The official informed the police team that he thought they were hijackers and therefore tried to flee. The police torture on Bikash comes less than one week after a Bangladesh Bank official, Golam Rabbi, was tortured and threatened with life by some policemen of Mohammadpur police station, led by SI Masud Shikdar. UNB adds: The Police Headquarters yesterday formed a three-member panel to investigate the alleged harassment of the Bangladesh Bank official and the DSCC official by police. Sources at the police headquarters said the probe panel was formed with Additional DIG (ICT) Barrister Harun-ur-Rashid as its head. Its two other members are Additional SP Md Mizanur Rahman and Inspector Salahuddin. The committee has been asked to submit its report as early as possible.
