Sand lifting triggers erosion in Bogra

Illegal sand lifting from the Jamuna River in Baniajan area in Dhunat upazila has triggered erosion threatening an under-construction right bank conservation project, nearby establishments, a cluster village and croplands.  Local people said some influential people are allegedly lifting sand from the river bed using shallow machine-run dredgers and selling it to local contractors.  They said the river erosion has taken a serious turn in recent weeks due to rampant sand lifting by using dredger.  The under-construction project on the right bank of Jamuna River has been threatened by illegal sand lifting.  Abdus Sobhan, Abdul Gafur and Shamsur Rahman of Shaharabari village in Dhunat upazila said villagers are in fear of losing houses and crop lands as the erosion of river has increased in recent weeks.  The government has allocated billions of taka to prevent the erosion of the river. It has undertaken a project of building a 1,200 metres long flood control embankment from Gorali to Koyagari area in the upazila at a cost of Tk 42 crores to protect farmlands, houses and other establishments from onslaught of the river.
