Senior officials of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) yesterday (Thursday) called upon the government to minimise differences between the Election Commission and the BPSC in terms of dignity, status and salary. They came up with the call at a view-exchange meeting on "Thoughts in development and appointment in public administration", organised at the BPSC's conference room in the city. Bureaucrats said discrimination between officials of the two constitutional bodies cannot be accepted under any circumstance. It should be reduced to build a competent administration, which will help fulfill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s dream to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income state by 2021.
An Election Commissioner gets a salary similar to that of a High Court judge, but a BPSC member is paid the equivalent of what a secretary earns. This is a clear discrimination, they observed. They said they are thinking of introducing in the near future a new system in the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) exams. The examinees will have to face a total of 200 marks in a preliminary test to qualify in the first phase out of three.
