Newly-appointed Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla has said that his first job is to implement and consolidate the ‘very extensive and far-reaching’ decisions already taken by the leaderships of Bangladesh and India. He also said that his mandate is to expand and strengthen Dhaka-New Delhi relationship, which is already close. “Of course, everyone has ideas and agenda. I think the important thing is that certain amount of decisions that have been taken by the leadership of both the countries…very very extensive and far-reaching decisions. Those need to be implemented as soon as possible,” High Commissioner-designate Shringla told a questioner upon arrival at Hazrat Shahjalala International Airport yesterday from Bangkok.
“So, it is important for us to start on the implementation and consolidation of already taken decisions. I think that is the first task at hand. And, of course, there is a lot more to come,” he added. Prior to the new assignment, Shringla was serving as India’s Ambassador to Thailand. After presenting his credentials to the president, he will replace Pankaj Saran who left Dhaka last month to assume the responsibilities of Indian Ambassador to Russia.
At the outset of his arrival statement, the High Commissioner-designate said in Bangla that he is very happy to have been able to come to Bangladesh as the envoy and his main responsibility would be to take the friendly relationship between the two neighbours to a new height. “I hope I will be able to pass my time very nicely in your beautiful country,” he said, seeking cooperation of the media. Describing Bangladesh as Sonar Bangla, Shringla said, “I have been here several times when I was in the headquarters in New Delhi. But, of course, leading is a different experience.” “Bangladesh is one of India’s most important neighbours. So, for me, this is the responsibility which I am very very happy to accept,” he said. About his mandate, the envoy said, “My mandate is to expand and strengthen the already close bilateral relationship that we have with Bangladesh under the guidance and leadership of both of our countries.”
And, he added, “I look forward to fulfilling that task, of course, with support of all of you from the media.” In the course of his diplomatic career spanning 32 years, Shringla has held a variety of positions in New Delhi and in different Indian missions including Paris, Hanoi and Tel Aviv, said an Indian High Commission press release yesterday. He had also served in the Ministry of External Affairs as Joint Secretary (Director General) responsible for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Maldives. Meanwhile, according to sources concerned, Indian High Commissioner-designate Shringla went to the Foreign Ministry in the afternoon and met with Chief of Protocol to discuss the issue of presenting his credentials to the President.
He also met Director General of the South Asia wing of the ministry, they said. British High Commissioner-designate Alison Blake, who arrived in the capital on Wednesday, also travelled to the Foreign Ministry and met the Chief of Protocol and Director General of Europe wing, said the sources. She also talked about presentation of her credentials to the President, they said.
