All the Palli Bidyut Samitis (PBSs) have been instructed to provide pending electricity connections to industries on a priority basis.
On Wednesday, Maj. Gen. Main Uddin, chairman of the Rural Electrification Board (REB), instructed all the general managers of the PBSs to carry out this instruction during an hour-long video conference at the REB headquarters in Dhaka.
Sources with the REB said that during the conference, the REB chairman asked the general managers of the PBSs to provide electricity connections to industries, along with residential customers, on a “priority basis”. He particularly instructed the PBSs to provide connections to those industrial units whose electricity connections are in “pending status”.
He warned the officials that if connections were not provided to the industries, the officials responsible would suffer harsh consequences.
He also told the general managers that various incentives—such as promotions, foreign training, monetary benefits and administrative recognition—would be given to those PBSs and officials who would be able to provide pending connections in time and reduce system loss and check voltage drops by installing capacitors.
During the conference, Main Uddin also instructed the general managers of the PBSs to ensure continuous supply of electricity to farmers during the upcoming irrigation season. Besides, he asked the GMs and the superintendent engineers to prepare for installing 35,000 km of electricity lines in the 2016–17 fiscal year. An official with the REB informed The Independent that around 12,000 new electricity connections have remained “pending”.
The REB chairman told The Independent that economic progress would be accelerated if electricity connections were given to industries on a priority basis. “The unemployment rate would also come down as a result,” he pointed out.
He said electricity connections should be provided to all industries by June 2016. “We're planning to provide five lakh new connections every month in the near future,” he added.
