Hundreds of outdoor patients suffered for the 4th consecutive day yesterday as the doctors Barisal Sher- e -Bangla Medical College and Hospital (SBMC) continued protest, paralysing health services at the largest public sector health facility of the city.
Doctors of SBMC went on strike and work abstention programme from 12noon to 2PM yesterday to protest the 8th National Pay Scale and demanded immediate return to selection grade and time scale as in the seventh Pay Commission. As the clock struck 12pm, all doors of the hospital were closed and a large number of patients (outdoor) who had come for treatment from remote areas of the southern region were forced to return from outside SBMCH. According to hospital sources, nearly half of the 3,000-odd patients (outdoor) who visit the hospital daily were forced to return home without treatment that day. All SBMCH doctors joined the strike, including interns who remained absent from service during two hours of the strike.
Divisional Organising Secretary Prokrichi BCS 26 Cedar and Non Cedar Functional Service Samannoy Committee Dr Shirin Shabiha Tonny said that the strike will continue till January 17 if the government fails to fulfill their demands.
Meanwhile, a protest meeting was held at the main gate of the hospital. Speakers at the agitation said that the 8th national pay scale is an insult to the status of 15,000 teachers across 37 universities of the country, which is why they have rejected it.
