Khulna City Corporation (KCC) has failed to collect a large amount of taxes from the government and private organisations, including holding taxes as much as Tk 54.22 crore from the city dwellers. The KCC authorities could not pay regular bills of contractors and others recently due to shortage of fund.They could not implement many development projects due to lack of fund, said KCC insiders. According to KCC sources, the present sum of holding tax that is due in Khulna City Corporation area stands at about Tk 54.22 crore.
KCC tax collector Md Nazrul Islam while taking to The Independent yesterday at his office said individuals, factories, government and non-government organisations owe the money to the corporation. Nazrul Islam also complained that the dues became large as the owners did not pay bills in due time and they did not pay any heed to the KCC notices to pay the dues. Deputy Collector of Tax of KCC Tapan Kumar Nandi said they were facing obstacles in realising a total due of Tk 32,19,37,090 from the owners of the government and autonomous factories and institutions. He said the remaining holding tax of the individuals and privately run establishments amounted to Tk22,02,72,091.
KCC officials said among the government organistions the due of Bangladesh Railway is Tk13,09,10,424, that of Khulna Development Authority (KDA) is Tk 8,42,26,239, that of Commodore Commanding BNS Titumir, Khulna Tk 1,16,08,825 and that of Zila Parishad, Khulna is Tk 9,50,767.
The holding tax due of Sonali Jute Mills Limited is Tk 76,54,000, Ajax Jute Mills Limited Tk 37,93,217, Khulna Newsprint Mills Limited Tk 1,37,00,000, Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills Tk 70,00,000, Daulatpur Jute Mills Tk 43,94,000, Karmojibi Mohila Hostel, Khulna Tk 2,87,000, Hard Board Mills Limited Tk 1,32,945, Dada Match Factory Tk 15,24,328 and Khulna Government Girls’ College, Boyra Tk 10,16,000/-.
Besides, Ad-Din Medical College Hospital, Khulna owes Tk 13,51,509, Helal Jute Press
Tk 50,31,549, Khas Chandina and Vested Properties in the corporation area Tk 1,34,78,760, they said.
Tax Collector Md Nazrul Islam said the corporation had already sent notices to the people and authorities concerned for several times and even informed the ministries concerned of different government establishments to pay the dues but they did not get active response from them.
He also said, “We have already issued red notice and demand notice to the people and authorities concerned but got a very little response.”
Nazrul Islam told ‘The Independent’ that the corporation will take steps to realise the due holding taxes and lodge cases under Public Demand Recovery Act 1913 against the owners to realise the money.
Mayor of KCC Md Moniruzaman urged the city dwellers to pay their outstanding taxes without surcharge during the current month of June, adding that payment of holding taxes would help them ensure civic facilities and development of the city.
