Boy drowns in bucket
SAVAR: A minor boy drowned in a bucket of water in Genda area under Savar upazila yesterday.
The victim was identified as Jihad, 4, son of Jamal Uddin of the area. Victim's father said Jihad drowned in the bucket of water in the morning, when his mother left him alone.
Locals rushed Jihad to Savar upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.
Roof collapse kills worker
GAZIPUR: A construction worker was killed when the roof of a security check-post room collapsed on him in Chabagan area of the city yesterday morning. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Witnesses said the roof of Gazipur Deputy Commissioner residence’s security check-post room fell on the worker while he, along with one of his co-workers, was repairing the room at about 8:30am, leaving him critically injured.
Later, the injured worker was rushed to Shahid Taj Uddin Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead. Sources of the hospital confirmed the death.
83 arrested in Ctg
CHITTAGONG: Police in overnight special drives arrested 83 people, including three activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, from different places of Chittagong district early yesterday. The law enforcers also seized 116 liters of liquor and one kilogram hemp during the drives. Naimul Hasan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district said they detained 83 people in the overnight drive in various places under different upazilas from Monday night to Tuesday morning.
During the raid at robber Adhuya's den in Satkania Upazila, the law enforcers also recovered two LG rifles, six rounds of cartridges and four cocktails. He said that among the arrestees, seven are accused in regular cases and 73 are wanted in different other cases.
Garment scrap warehouses gutted
GAZIPUR: A total of 100 warehouses of garment scraps in Tongi Millgate area of the city early yesterday.
Fire service sources said the fire originated at a warehouse in the area about 12:30 am and soon engulfed the adjoining other warehouses. Being informed, three fire-fighting units from Tongi Fire Service rushed to the spot and doused the blaze after two hours of frantic efforts.
The extent of loss caused by the fire could not be known immediately. Tongi Fire Service station officer Selim Miah confirmed the incident.
Juba Dal leader held in Sylhet
SYLHET: Police in a drive arrested a local leader of Juba Dal from Kalbakhani area in the city on Friday.
The arrestee was identified as Kamrul Hasan Shahin.
Tipped off, a team of police conducted a raid on Shahin’s house at about 7pm and arrested him, said Gousul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Airport Police Station.
Police arrested Shahin in connection with three cases filed over subversive activities during hartal and blockade programme of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, the OC added.
