Indian skipper Virat Kohli was reluctant to take Bangladesh as guaranteed, stating that the improvement of the hosts is impressive which they proved byreaching in the quarterfinal stage of the World Cup.
“We do not take any team lightly. The improvement of Bangladesh is impressive, they defeated big teams in World Cup and the way they play in Australia. The condition was not familiar. They showed the belief,” Kohli said yesterday ahead of the one-off Test at Fatullah Stadium.
He revealed that they have plans for Bangladesh but execute those plan on the ground would be key in determining their success.
“We have plans for particular batsmen. We have played against Tamim, Mominul and Shakib a lot in the past. But playing a Test match against so many of them for the first time will be a little bit different,” he said.
“As I said before they did very well in the ODI that is why the confidence will be carried in the Test matches as well. So we do have plans. It is all about executing plans. Having plans is one thing but you need to execute and try to win the match.”
Only three Indian players- opener Murali Vijay, off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and fast bowler Ishant Sharma earlier played a Test in Bangladesh.
India played their last Test series here back in 2010, a series which was heated by Virendar Sehwag’s disrespectful comments about Bangladesh. Sehwag termed Bangladesh as an ordinary side, saying he didn’t believe that Bangladesh had the bowling resources to take 20 wickets in Test cricket.
Virat Kohli who will play his first Test against Bangladesh rather was more diplomatic in assessing Bangladesh’s ability.
“I have not played any Test against Bangladesh. If you see their ODI graph they are improving. So the guys at the stage are pretty much confident of the way they are playing. They did very well against Pakistan as well. I have not played against them at all. So unless you play them you do not know how they will react in different situation,” he said.
“We cannot take any team lightly. Now how will they react that is their concern. We have to think what we do. You have to bowl well to every batsman no matter he is de Villiers or Shakib Al Hasan. You have to do your work.”
This will be Virat Kohli’s first series as India’s Test captain after the sudden retirement of MS Dhoni in the half-way mark of the series against Australia. The 26-year old is keen to make a statement.
“I have some vision in my mind which I have discussed with the team,” he said. “We are all on the same page. It is pretty exciting for me to start as full-time Test captain and hopefully it will be a positive start.”
“Actually from Sydney I became full time Test captain. It is a special moment for me tomorrow when I go out to toss. Something that I will probably cherish when I finish my career.”
The vision of Virat Kohli is to play an aggressive brand of cricket which yet again he made clear when he repeatedly emphasized on to take 20 wickets to win the Test.
“There is every possibility. I certainly believe that you need to take 20 wickets to win a Test match. Out of your batting unit, you need 2-3 people to click to get a score of 500. So I certainly believe in giving our team a chance to pick up 20 wickets. I am a big fan of the 6-5 combination.”
