Potato growers in Bhola district are expecting bumper yield in the current crop season. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources, potatoes were cultivated on 8320 hectares of land in the district this current season, which is more than 2,000 hectares over the target. Farmers in Bhola sadar upazila have expressed optimism about good yield this season. Abdul Mannan, 40, a potato farmer of this area, said he has cultivated potatoes on three acres of land this season. He expects to make a profit of Tk 2 lacks this season, twice higher than last year. A kilogram of potato is now being sold at Tk 25 in the kitchen markets, which was Tk 10 to 15 last year. While contacted Riazuddin Sardar, upazila agriculture officer, said the potato production increased this year due to a favorable weather and application of modern technology. There is also no report of any pest attack and diseases, he said. Prashanto Kumar Shaha, deputy director DAE, Bhola, said the potato production increased in the district this season also because of as timely supply of seed and fertiliser.
