BCL man held for attempt to snatch arms from police

An activist of Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL) was arrested while trying to snatch arms from police members in Tongi. The incident took place when a police team intercepted a group collecting illegal toll from road-side vendors in Tongi area immediate after Akheri Munajat of Bishwa Ijtema, said police. The arrested was identified as Saikat, who claimed to be a member of Tongi Thana Chhatra league. Assitant Superintendent of Gazipur Traffic Police Shakhawat Hossain said some BCL activists were collecting illegal toll between tk 100 to 200 from each roadside shops on footpaths in Modhomita Road area near Tongi Bazaar yesterday. When the on-duty police team intercepted the illegal toll collectors, the group locked in an altercation with police. At one statge, BCL activists, numbering 8 to 9, dragged 3 policemen to a nearby alley and also tried to snatch arms from them. Getting information, additional police from the police control room in front of the Ijtema ground rushed to the spot and rescued the three policemen. They also caught Saikat from the spot while the other members fled the scene. Saikat was handed over to Tongi police station after interrogation. Saikat said he is a member of Tongi Thana Chhatra League and named others as local BCL assistant secretary Nayeem, member Shakil, Roni, Manik and Shahidul, said police.
