Party to expel municipal poll rebels
Abu Jakir

The ruling Awami League (AL) yesterday decided to hold its 20th triennial central council session on March 28 in the capital’s historic Suhrawardy Udyan. The Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC), the highest policymaking body of the country’s oldest political party, at a meeting also decided to permanently cancel the primary memberships of the rebel AL grassroots leaders who had contested against the party symbol ‘boat’ in the recently concluded municipality elections.
Also, action will be taken against the party lawmakers who had patronised rebel candidates in the local body polls, decided the ALCWC at the meeting held at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Ganabhaban. Hasina, also the AL president, chaired the meeting that lasted for about three hours from 6pm. Talking to this correspondent at Ganabhaban, AL General Secretary and Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam said, “We have unanimously decided to hold our party’s 20th national council session at 10am on March 28 at historic Suhrawardy Udyan.”
“In this regard, we have decided to form several sub-committees which will work on selecting new members for the AL executive body and will recommend the removal of any member from the existing committee. The sub-committees will submit their proposals in the next ALCWC meeting,” he said.
The meeting took the decision that the sub-committees will be formed under the leadership of Syed Ashraf, meeting sources said.
They also said that the number of AL joint general secretaries, organising secretaries and executive members will be increased through an amendment to the party constitution.
During the meeting, AL President Sheikh Hasina extended the tenure of the present committee for another six months so that the current committee can bring necessary changes to the AL constitution.
The party held its 19th central council on December 29, 2012, and the tenure of the current committee, according to the party constitution, expired on December 28, 2015.
Contacted, AL Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said, “The AL leaders who contested against the boat symbol in the recently held municipal polls will be purged from the party soon. Not only that, actions will be taken against the AL lawmakers who had patronised rebel candidates in the polls.”
The meeting also discussed the upcoming Union Parishad elections.
Sheikh Hasina has opted for holding the elections under party symbol, despite several central leaders proposing that the polls be held in a non-partisan manner, AL Organizing Secretary BM Mozammel Haque told The Independent. The AL president also directed her party’s top leadership to complete pending district council sessions within this month without fail, meeting sources said.
