�Tortured� minor domestic help dies at DMCH

After a 20-hour battle for her life, a female minor domestic help succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday. She was identified as Jaba Akter, 10, daughter of one Jahangir Hossain of Sonatola village in Bogra. DMCH resident physician Partha Shankar Paul said, ‘‘We tried our best to save her life, but she died around 8:30 am as she had suffered almost 90 per cent burn injuries.” According to the relatives of the victim, around three years ago, she started working as a domestic help at the house of banker Mehedi Hasan alias Kallol in Shiddheswari area.
But due to the tortures by her employers, she left the house about one-and-a-half years back. Six months ago, the banker again brought her to his house promising that they would never torture her.
But Mehedi and his wife Polly continued to torture her over petty issues, the victim’s family alleged.
Mehedi denied the allegations of torture.
SI Sharif Hossain of Ramna Model Police Station said the girl also could not give police much detail about the matter, as she was in operating theatre when police reached DMCH. Quoting the relatives of the victim, Inspector Mozammel Haque, in-charge of DMCH police camp, said on Friday, the victim was admitted to the hospital with severe burn injuries on her body.
