71st birth anniv celebration of Kalidas at Nat’l Museum today

Bangladesh National Museum is arranging a show titled ‘Alluvial Rhythm’-Creating Art with Music by internationally renowned artist Kalidas Karmakar to celebrate his 71st birth anniversary today at the Museum’s main auditorium. The event will be held as a part of Kalidas’ ongoing 72nd exhibition at the Nalini Kanta Bhattasali Gallery of the Nat’l Museum. Prime Minister’s International Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi will inaugurate the show as chief guest while Chairman of Bengal Foundation Abul Khair Litu, Editor of Annaya Magazine Tasmima Hossain and Managing Director of Mohammadi Group Rubana Huq will be present as special guests. The show is being hosted by ARTcon.
Artist Kalidas Karmakar, born on January 10, 1946, is best known as an exceptional print-maker, painter, sculptor and installation artist. He made his mark as an artist with a difference in his first ever-major solo exhibition held at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Gallery in August 1976. He has distinguished himself as an experimentalist then and remains one even today. He impressed all of us with his skill in Drawing, his adventures with the use of unorthodox materials and media, as well as his philosophical attitude to art. He is an accomplished graphic artist, especially in etching and mixed media technique. He specialises in the French multi-coloured etching (Viscosity process) and work with World famous artist S.W. Hayter who invented the Viscosity technique in 1930 at Atelier-17 Paris. Kalidas is such a versatile artist with no boundaries. Kalidas, one of the most internationally acclaimed artists of Bangladesh received Sultan Padak in 2015. He restlessly travelling from Poland to Paris, from Brazil to Beijing, from Turkey to Tokyo, is returning predictably on each occasion to his homeland, to pour out his passion. Kalidas Karmakar is indeed a very significant name in the world of modern art of Bangladesh. At 70 he is still very youthful and exuberant, creative person, an artist Par Excellence.
