BNP has accused the Awami League of ‘conspiring’ to split their 20-party opposition combine, as the ruling party has become ‘politically bankrupt’, reports UNB.
“It seems that an old party like Awami League, which had fought for democracy, has now become politically bankrupt. That’s why it is resorting to efforts to create a rift in a political alliance,” said the party’s acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in remarks yesterday, that came just two days after a faction of the Islami Oikyo Jote (IOJ), led by Abdul Latif Nezami, splintered off the BNP’s alliance.
Incidentally Mirza Fakhrul was speaking at the national council of another alliance partner, the Labour Party (LP), when he spoke of the government’s alleged shenanigans.
Fakhrul said, “The ruling party should have worked for expansion and development of democracy here. Instead of doing that they’re now trying to split political parties and alliances.”
The BNP leader called upon all democracy-loving political parties and people to get unite behind the task of ‘restoring democracy’ in Bangladesh.
The Labour Party, established under the leadership of Moulana Abdul Matin in 1974, held its council at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh. Ex-VC of Dhaka University Prof. Emajuddin Ahmed inaugurated the council, where over 150 delegates of the party’s 44 organisational districts and city units joined the council.
Even as they did, Fakhrul alleged that opposition political parties and activists “cannot now carry out their activities”, being denied democratic space. “There is no political atmosphere anywhere. We can’ t hold any meeting or rally. We are even obstructed from gathering in our offices to hold meetings there.”
He accused the government of destroying the country’s election system to perpetuate its own reign.
“People now are being denied their right to franchise. People couldn’ t cast their votes during the January 5 election of 2014, the upazila polls that followed, and this year city and municipal ones, too. Next the union parishad elections will be held again by depriving people of their voting rights,” he observed.
To overcome this situation, Fakhrul said a unity of patriots and democracy-loving people is a must. “We have to forge a national unity and unite the country’s people without further delay. We need to do everything, including waging a movement, to restore our rights.”
