The first phase of the Bishwa Ijtema will conclude with the offering of the "Akheri Munajat"(final prayers) today. It is expected that several million devotees will join the final prayers. A large number of devotees started their journey to attend the "Akheri Munajat" yesterday. The "Akheri Munajat" will be held between 10am and 11.30am, the deputy commissioner of Gazipur, SM Alam, said during his media briefing at the district administration control room beside the Ijtema ground yesterday. He said: “I was informed of this by organisers of the Bishwa Ijtema.”
The bank of the Turag river, the venue of the congregation, an annual event, has turned into a vast sea of humanity, with devotees spilling over to adjoining areas and roads. This year, devotees from 32 districts, out of 64, are taking part in the two phases of the Ijtema. In the first phase, devotees from 17 districts have joined the congregation, while those from 15 districts will take part in the second phase that begins on January 15 and ends on January 17.
The second day of the first phase started with the religious sermon (“boyan”) delivered by an Indian Islamic scholar, Mawlana Ismail Hossain Godra. Indian Mawlana Mohammed Jamshed, Mawlana Mohammed Yousuf and Mawlana Khorshed also delivered “boyans” on Saturday. Devotees listened to the sermons under the tent on the Ijtema ground.
Ijtema sources said 7,152 devotees from 95 countries have arrived at the three tents put up for foreigners at the Ijtema ground.
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police (Dhaka Range), SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman, who visited the Ijtema ground yesterday, said, “About 12,000 police and RAB have been deployed, in addition to several thousand plainclothes policemen.”
The Superintendent of Police, Gazipur, Harun-Or-Rashid said vehicular movement from Joydebpur Chowrasta to Tongi, Airport to Abdullahpur on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and from Mirerbazar to Tongi Station Road on Tongi-Ghorashal road will be suspended from 3am till the evening on day of the Akheri Munajat.
Two more devotees died on the second day of the Ijtema. They were identified as Abul Kalam Azad, 60, son of Mohammed Kala Mia of Sondorpur village in the Kabirhat police station area of Noakhali district, and Alauddin, 65, son of the late Mofiz Uddin of Toker Bazaar area in Sylhet district. With this two, five devotees have died on the Ijtema venue till yesterday afternoon.
