Minister’s son, 8 others killed

At least eight people, including a son of the land minister, were killed and 40 others injured in a series of road crashes on Bangabandhu Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge yesterday morning. Police and eyewitnesses said the accidents occurred due to poor visibility caused by dense fog and power outage on the bridge.
Meanwhile, 7 others were killed in road crashes in 4 districts across the country.
Bangabandhu East Police Station OC Akhteruzzaman said a number of crashes took place between pillars 25 to 42 on the bridge yesterday morning. The first accident took place at about 7 AM when a Dhaka bound bus of Sarker Paribahan from Pabna hit a cattle laden truck from behind near pillar 40 on the bridge, killing four persons on the spot and injuring 23 others.
Soon after the first accident, several other vehicles ran into accidents in the same area on the bridge, including a truck, a SUV, an ambulance, a mini truck, a pick-up van of police, a transporter of fire fighters and a motorbike of journalists. All these vehicles, driving in dense fog, rammed the accident affected bus and truck within hours of the first accident. Ten people including five members of police and fire brigade and two journalists were injured in these accidents.

Meanwhile, a northern region-bound truck from Dhaka hit a truck from behind on the bridge and a number of other vehicles, including another truck and a bus, leaving one killed and several injured.
People injured in these accidents were sent to Tangail Sadar Hospital and Sirajganj General Hospital. Among the injured, Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif’s son Sharif Rana, 35, who was also suffering from heart disease, succumbed at Tangail Medical College Hospital. Two other victims died at Sirajganj Hospital.
Three among the deceased were identified as Tofazzol Hossain, 35, of village Konabari under Sirajgong district, Noor Alim, 42, and Sohel, 35, of Sujanagar in Pabna district, said police. Police recovered the bodies and sent these to Tangail and Sirajganj hospitals for autopsy.
The injured journalists were identified as Rifat Rahman, District Correspondent of Masranga TV and Rinku Kunda, District Correspondent of Somoy TV.
Thousands of vehicles on both sides from Elenga to Bangabandhu Bridge and up to Kodda intersection in the west remained stranded for hours due to the accidents, causing immense sufferings to the passengers.
In Chuadanga, at least three people were killed and eight others were injured as two buses collided head at Joyrampur Kathaltola village in Damurhuda upazila on the Chuadanga-Jibannagar road yesterday morning.
The deceased were identified as Dulal Ahmmed, 37, driver of Purbasa Poribahan, inhabitant of Juranibazar in Dhaka, Shammi Ahsan, 35, driver of Darshana Delux, inhabitant of village Natupara in Kaligonj upazila of Jhinedah district and Aroj Ali, 26, son of  Afajuddin of village Baguan in Mujibnagar upazila of Meherpur district.
Liakat Hossain, OC of Damurhuda Police Station, said Dhaka bound Darshana Delux collided head on with a bus of Chuadanga Purbasha Paribahan at Joyrampur village. Getting information, a police team rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies and sent the injured passengers to hospital for treatment. A case was filed with Damurhuda police.
Meanwhile, two people including a freedom fighter were killed in separate road accidents in Chittagong.
Abdul Haq, a freedom fighter, was killed after being hit by a covered van in Kasumpura area of Patiya in Chittagong.
Md Abdul Haq, 70, son of Nabab Mia is a local resident of Kasumpura Union of Patiya.
Sources said, a covered van hit Haq as he was returning from a road-side land that he owned. He was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in a critical condition where the duty doctor declared him dead.
A man was killed and one other injured as a bus hit a motorcycle in Bor Dighir Par area under Hathazari Police station in Chittagong.
The ill-fated was identified as Md Rasel, 22, son of Aminul Islam, hailing from Natun Para area of Hathazari. He was a Painter by profession.
Police said, two riders of a motorbike were injured when their bike got hit by a bus. The injured were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where duty doctors declared Rasel dead.
Meanwhile, an unidentified pedestrian was killed when a sand-laden truck ran him over in Bollya area under Sadar Upazila of Tangail at 11 AM.
BSS adds: A youth was killed and three others were injured in a road accident in Monoharpur area on the Pabna-Ishwardi highway yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Sweet, 24, son of Ajmat Ali of the same area.
Police said the accident occurred when a truck hit a CNG-run auto rickshaw at about 8.30 am, leaving four passengers of the vehicle injured.
The wounded were sent to Pabna Medical College Hospital where Sweet succumbed to injuries.
