Bangladesh yesterday decided to import 100 megawatt (MW) electricity from Palatana power plant in Indian state of Tripura at a price of Tk 6.43 ($0.8 or 5.5rupee) per unit excluding wheeling charges. The decision was disclosed at a joint press conference of Nasrul Hamid, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, and Manik Dey, power minister of the Indian state of Tripura, at a hotel in the capital. The Tripura minister arrived in Dhaka on Friday.
Earlier in the day, Nasrul Hamid and officials of the Power Division sat with the Indian delegation at Biddyut Bhaban in the capital where issues relating to the 100MW power purchase from the Palatana plant were settled. The power import is expected to start from February.
“We have come to a decision to sign a power purchase agreement (PPA). Before that, the PPA proposal will be sent to the law ministry for vetting and it will then be forwarded to the cabinet committee on purchase,” Nasrul told journalists after the briefing.
A Power Division official, on condition of anonymity, said, the import of power from India was not essential for Bangladesh at present as the country has a surplus generation of electricity. “Besides, the purchase rate is also higher than that of the previous import,” he added.
Bangladesh is currently importing 500MW power from India through Bheramara in Kushtia since 2014 at a rate of Tk 4.50 per unit.
The official was of the opinion that the power import should start between April and May when the demand for electricity is at its peak in the country.
The import of electricity from India's north-eastern province of Tripura became uncertain following the both sides’ failure over fixing a favourable tariff although the trans-border grid was ready for trade.  India and Bangladesh have completed the installation of transmission lines for the supply of the 100MW electricity from Palatana.
The Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) and the Power Generation Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), both state-owned companies, tested the transmission lines on their respective sides in December last year and found those functioning properly. Besides, installation of a 47km transmission line from western Tripura to southern Comilla has also been completed.
Earlier, the planned import of the 100MW power from the Palatana station, scheduled to begin on December 16, got suspended because of a faulty transmission line.
