Academic activities at 425 educational institutes in 12 upazilas of Bogra district are being seriously hampered since the institutions were badly damaged in a severe storm on April 4.  Jamuna river erosion also caused full or partial damage to many of these institutions. Sufia Nazim, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education) in Bogra said the local administration has sent letters to the education ministry for fund allocation to re-build and repair the institutions.
However, no allocation has yet been made from the ministry. At least 198 primary schools and 186 collages were damage full and partially in the on April 4 this year, added Sufia Nazim. District administration sources also confirmed that the government has still not taken any effective measure to re-build or repair the institutes. District Primary Education Officer (DPEO) Md Hossain Ali said that the local administration recently provided
support to some institutions, allocating Tk 3 lac for fully damaged and between Tk 20-50 thousand for partially damaged structures. Gopal Chandra Sarker, District Education Officer (DEO) Bogra told that more than 200 government and non government colleges were damage on 4 April. Meanwhile, 15 primary schools and a college in Sariakandi Upazila were badly damaged in the flood and the Jamuna River erosion last year.
Students of Matbari Primary School along with other institutes in Sariakandi Upazila are attending classes facing serious risk due to the Jamuna River erosion.
The Chandon Baisha Government Primary School had to be shifted to a flood control embankment for this reason, said Jui Akter, the school headmistress.
“We are teaching 95 students of the school under the open sky as we have no class rooms” she said.
