Inspired by the winning start of the main national team, the Bangladesh Olympic (Under-23 team) will begin their campaign in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament when they will take Bahrain today.
The match will kick off at 2:45 pm at the Shamsul Huda Stadium in Jessore. The Under -23 national team is comprised with five senior players, while some of them also played for the national side.
However, the Olympic team has also been drawn in the tough group along with Bahrain, Cambodia and Maldives but the manager of the team Satayajit Das Rupu expecting about the team’s qualification in the knockout phage.
Rupu, while talking to this correspondent over phone from Jessore yesterday said, “All are ready to begin their mission. They are highly inspired by the winning start of the national side, I am very much hopeful and also believe that they will not dishearten us.”
Rupu, also the manger of the local giants Abahani Limited, under him the team recorded a hat-trick champion in the Bangladesh Premier League, thinks that their first step would be to cross the hurdle of the group phase – “Our foremost obligation is to cross over the group stage, but we have no idea about the opponents of our group, as Bahrain, in the last edition sent their youth team but his time we don’t know about the standard of this team.”
“Cambodia is also fully unknown team but I think both the teams, they and Maldives are almost similar strengthen teams to us.” “But I think Bahrain might be the strongest sides in our group. We have been also taking preparation for last three weeks, all the players are fit and they have eagerness to make winning start.”
“Obviously, I am optimistic that they will perform well, it is also challenging for the boys to make rooms in the SA Games bound team, who will perform better, will be a member of the team.
Rupu replying to a query about inclusion of five senior players said, “You know seven players, defenders Raihan Hassan, Topu Barman, Yasin Khan, goalkeeper Liton, forwards Hemanta Vincent, Sohel Rana and Jewel Rana are playing for the senior teams. So we had to include the senior players to form the team.”
