AL wont agree to an understanding violating constitution: Suranjit

BSS

Awami League Advisory Council member Suranjit Sengupta yesterday said his party would not forge any understanding violating or amending the constitution, reports BSS.
“If talks or dialogues are required for polls then talks can be held at the time of election. No talks can be held beyond the constitution,” he said in an oblique reference to BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s dialogue proposal.
Suranjit , also chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion in the city.
Bangabandhu Adarsha Mulyaan O Gabeshana Sangsad organised the discussion on ‘Bangabandhu and Bangladesh’ in the auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity at Segunbagicha to mark the Homecoming Day of Bangabandhu.
Sangsad president Siddique Hossain Chowdhury presided over the discussion, also addressed, among others, by former Home Minister Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku, assistant secretary of Awami League sub-committee Advocate Balaram Poddar, general secretary of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote Arun Sarker Rana and general secretary of the Sangsad Jahangir Alam.
Pointing at BNP chairperson, Suranjit Sengupta said, “No benefit can be derived by repeating slogans for dialogue. The mahfil (public gathering) meant for the Bangla month of Poush will not be successful if it is held in the month of Chaitra. Awami League is not against dialogue. But, it’s not possible from our part to do anything by violating the constitution.”
The senior Awami League leader said, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina invited Begum Khaleda Zia for talks over a cup of tea. But rejecting the dialogue offer of the Prime Minister, BNP chairperson then plunged into the politics of killing by hurling patrol bombs. She unleashed destructive activities by killing people, torching buses and uprooting railway tracks in the name of so-called movement.”
