Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif yesterday alleged that it is the BNP that believes in the politics of splitting up political parties and not the Awami League. “It is BNP founder late General Ziaur Rahman, who had started the politics of splitting parties and forming new political parties after the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. AL, on the other hand, is respectful to the all political parties and its past record does not give support to the ideology of splitting any political party,” he said.
Hanif, also a ruling party lawmaker, was addressing a press conference after a views exchange meeting with pro-AL professional bodies at the party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office in the capital. The meeting was held to successfully organize a rally to mark the homecoming day of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on January 11, at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. The AL leader castigated BNP Vice-Chairman Major (Retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed for accusing the AL-led government of trying to split the 20-party alliance by adopting, what he claimed, a carrot and stick policy. The Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ), headed by Maulana Abdul Latif Nezami, on Thursday, pulled out of the BNP-led 20-party alliance. The AL joint general secretary said BNP leader Hafiz is engaged in spreading falsehood to the nation that the AL-led government was trying to split the 20-party alliance. The BNP leader is doing so in a bid to improve his image to the BNP high-ups, Hanif said.
