Khaleda’s meeting with Modi was a failure: Hanif

Awami League (AL) Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif yesterday said the meeting between BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not ‘successful’.
“Khaleda had desperately tried to meet Modi and eventually she met him. But her desire to avail the Indian premier’s support did not materialise as Modi told her that India does not like fundamentalism and militancy,” Hanif said while addressing a programme in the capital.
“During the meeting, Khaleda Zia spoke against the AL-led government and sought Modi’s help to force the Sheikh Hasina government to arrange a mid-term election. However, after the meeting Khaleda realised that no election would be held before the timeframe mandated by the country’s constitution,” Hanif added.
Criticising the BNP for blaming the government in resolving the Tessta water sharing deal during Modi’s visit, Hanif said the BNP has become frustrated after the meeting with the Indian premier.
“And that is why the BNP has now engaged in spreading lies against the government,” he said, adding that it was announced at least 15 days ahead of Modi’s visit that the Tessta issue was not being discussed during the visit. So, there is no chance to spread lies over the issue, he added.
Earlier, in the day, BNP spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon said, “As a nation, we’ve got frustrated as the Teesta deal couldn’t be signed. It’s the government’s failure.”
On a separate note, Hanif, also an AL lawmaker, said Khaleda Zia has become an ‘unsuccessful leader’ and that’s why ‘there is no need to sit for talks with her’.
He however called upon the leaders and workers of the BNP to quit the party as it ‘has no future’.
