The Bailey bridge on the Ichhamoti River near Aambari Bazar at Phulbari-Dinajpur highway has collapsed once again six months into its repair disrupting vehicular movement, reports UNB.
The Bailey bridge broke down just when two stone-laden trucks bound for Chapainawabganj from Panchagarh got onto it on Wednesday night.
Road link between Dinajpur and other parts of the country has remained suspended due to the bridge collapse causing immense suffering to the passengers.
Tea seller Shahnewaz, who witnessed the accident, said the Bailey bridge broke down with a loud crash at 10:45pm. The drivers of the trucks and their helpers, who received minor injuries, were rescued by local people and sent for primary treatment.
Executive engineer of Roads and Highways Dinajpur division Suruj Miah said that the bridge had collapsed once again in June last year as a truck was plying over it.Then the broken bridge was repaired in two different parts, one of which got damaged again.
However, the engineer could not say anything when asked whether the bailey bridge would be replaced by a conventional concrete bridge. Locals have to remain in constant worry about an imminent collapse of the complete bridge. The executive engineer said locals have demanded a permanent bridge over the river rather than waiting for an alternate one.
