A Juba League leader was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash between two groups of transport workers’ association in Santahar of Adamdighi upazila yesterday.
The deceased has been identified as Md Shafiqul Islam, president of Santahar Juba League.
He was also the brother of local Awami League leader Rasedul Islam Raza, who took part in the recently held municipal mayoral eolection. Witnesses said the two groups of transport workers of Santahar town first scuffled on Thursday afternoon over booking of passengers. The issue was settled the same day. But the workers again locked in clash yesterday afternoon at around 1pm. During the melee Shafiqul Islam was hacked to death.
The clash also left 10 others, including Md Badsha Mia, another sibling of the AL leader, injured.
A few CNG-run auto rickshaws and battery-run rickshaws (easy bikes) were burnt down during the clash. The workers also set fire to the house of local Jatiya Party leader Ferdous Hasan’s Sumun in Santahar town. Md Asaduzzaman, Superintendent of Police of Bogra, said now the situation is under control.Additional police have been deployed and the police are trying to arrest of the culprits involved in the clash, he said.
