The drumbeat of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2016 will be started across the eight venues in four Bangladesh cities from January 27.
ICC, the apex body of World cricket, yesterday announced that all the participating (16) sides for this month’s World Cup have now been confirmed.
The 19-day-long mega event for the youths will feature nine Test playing countries as well as seven associate and affiliate members, namely Afghanistan, Canada, Fiji, Ireland, Namibia, Nepal and Scotland.
The curtain of the tournament will be opened with the match between defending champion South Africa and host-nation Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS) in Chittagong on January 27.
Like other teams, Bangladeshi youths have been preparing themselves for the event by honing their skills and techniques.
They have set an utmost target before them and are keen to implement it at home yard utilizing the advantage of the home condition.
All the players, who are now upbeat winning three home and away series on the trot, echoed the same sentiment and said that they want to move forward by one match strategy.
“We’ve devised a string of plans, in which we will go forward by one match approach. In this way, we want to surpass from the group stage to the second phase and reach to our ultimate target of final,” said Mehidy Hasan Miraz, skipper of Bangladesh U-19.
Bangladesh have been playing the youth World Cup since 1998. But they never win at cup championship though they clinched the title of plate phase four times from 2004. This time they have an opportunity to touch the stone at home soil.
“We’ve to play the first group match against defending champions South Africa, who were beaten by us at home and away series. The other two opponents are Scotland and Namibia though they are not too familiar with us. But we don’t think any hurdle to cross the group phase at home den,” Miraz, who led Bangladesh in the previous edition in UAE in 2014, thought.
Besides Miraz, who will spearhead Bangladesh as captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Joyraj Sheik Imon, Zakir Hasan and Saeed Sarker, who played for Bangladesh in the previous event in the United Arab Emirates, where the side finished ninth.
“Our team combination has been better than previous times as we all have been playing together since last two years. Along with that, we have been practicing regularly to sharpen our skills,” the 19-year-old all-rounder told The Independent.
Citing the name of the last tri-nation series in India, Miraz said that they could not bat well because of the surface condition.
“We played well throughout the year but we could not bat well in the last tri-nation series in India. Actually the condition of the wicket was not good enough for batting. But we’ve worked on it. Hopefully there will be no problem ahead,” the middle-order batsman reckoned.
