The government will undertake a Tk.744.75 crore feasibility study on land acquisition and safeguards for the proposed Bangladesh-Singapore 700mw ultra super critical coal-based power plant at Moheshkahli in Cox’s Bazar. The Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) of the Planning Commission has recommended tabling the project in the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting for approval. However, the commission has directed the concerned authority to reframe the Details Project Plan (DPP). According to the working paper of the meeting, Tk.300 crore has been allocated in the budget of the current fiscal to acquire land for the proposed project. The paper has also said that at least Tk.420 crore will be required in this fiscal if the commission approves the project.
Talking to The Independent, Power Division Secretary, Monwar Islam, said that the project will be implemented under the Bangladesh-Singapore Company and will take at least 10 years for completion. About the feasibility study, he said that if the ECNEC approves the project, necessary initiative will be taken as per the DPP.
Meanwhile, the government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore-based Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd for setting up a 1,400mw coal-fired power plant as Joint Venture (JV) at Matarbari of Maheshkahli in Cox’s Bazar. According to the MoU, Coal Power Generation Company of Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) and Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd will set up the power plant having a capacity of 700mwin the first phase and another 700mw in the second phase on a 50:50 equity basis.
According to project details, Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd will set up the coal-fired power plant under project “700mw Matarbari Coal Fired Power Plant Project (Phase-I)” at Matarbari.
The power plant will be built using Ultra Supercritical Technology and authorities expect to complete it by December 2022.
